Soe Besar Vanrei Phinisi
A ranger, a trail, and wild dragons
Updated 8 November 2026
The Komodo Island ranger walk is on day two of all three Soe Besar Vanrei routes. A park ranger leads a short, medium or long loop of 45 to 120 minutes from Loh Liang. Children and older guests ask for the short one, and dragons are never guaranteed.
Komodo Island in numbers and in order
Day 2, after Pink Beach, Komodo: a ranger leads; the short loop is the one to ask for.
The walk starts at the Loh Liang station. No one trekks without a park ranger, and the ranger sets the pace and the path. Short, medium and long trails exist, and most itineraries take the shorter ones. The walk takes 45 to 120 minutes depending on the loop. The grade is easy, the ground is dirt, and the path is flat to rolling.
On the 2D1N, 3D2N and 4D3N it follows Pink Beach. The park package, quoted per trip type and paid with the deposit, covers entry and the ranger. It is kept apart from the fare.
We do not print a distance for any loop.

The ranger's loops: short, medium, long
The ranger chooses the loop on the day. A guest who wants the short loop says so at the station. The ranger then sets the route and the pauses, and the whole group follows it, from the youngest child to the oldest guest, at the speed of the slowest. The short loop suits a party with young children or older legs. The medium loop adds time and ground. The long loop is for those who ask for it and can walk for the better part of two hours.
- Short: easy; the right ask for a mixed party.
- Medium: longer, still easy underfoot.
- Long: only for confident walkers.
Rinca is a separate park area and is not on a route here. Any swap for Komodo would be agreed with the captain and is not promised.
Park rules apply to everyone, and the ranger has the last word on where a group stands.

Children and older guests on the trail
Closed shoes matter, and long sleeves or sunscreen help, because there is little shade on the trails. Bring water and a hat. Children walk with the group and with a parent beside them, and they follow the ranger's instructions exactly. A small child who gets tired is better carried than coaxed.
Older guests can take the short loop at their own speed with the ranger setting pauses. A guest who prefers to stay on the boat loses nothing else on the day, since Manta Point and Taka Makassar come afterward.
Wheelchair access to the trail or the landing is not claimed. A guest who needs it writes to us first, and we answer in writing before any payment is due, with the plain facts about the ground and the landing as far as we know them.
What the dragons do and do not promise
Dragons are wild animals, not exhibits. Some days a group sees several. On other days it sees none, and the ranger shows tracks and nesting ground in their place. Nobody on the boat, in our team or at the station can promise a sighting.
The same holds for distance. We print no number for how close a dragon comes, because the rule is the ranger's, not ours. Keep to the group, keep your voice low and do as the ranger says.
Caveat: the trail can close for park reasons, and the ranger can change the loop without notice.
FAQ
How long is the Komodo ranger walk?
The walk takes 45 to 120 minutes, depending on whether the ranger leads the short, medium or long loop. Ask for the short one if the party includes young children or older legs. The ranger decides on the day, and the loop can change for park reasons.
What if we do not see a dragon?
It happens. Dragons are wild, and a sighting is never guaranteed on any trip. The ranger can still show tracks and the habitat, and the walk is worth taking for the landscape. The park package is paid for the walk and the ranger, not for a sighting.
Can young children and grandparents join the walk?
Yes, on the short loop and with the ranger beside them. No age limit is set on our side, and the ranger can decline a loop that does not suit the party. Tell us ages and mobility when you book, and we confirm the plan in writing.
Is the ranger fee included in the boat price?
No. The Komodo National Park package covers the entrance ticket plus ranger and local levies. It is quoted per trip type and paid in full with the deposit, and it is not part of a fare. Tips for rangers and guides are separate.
