Multigenerational travel in Komodo suits Soe Besar Vanrei, a 31 m phinisi with seven cabins for 16 guests. The whole boat costs IDR 162,000,000 (≈ USD 9,939) for three days and two nights. A single cabin on the open trip starts at IDR 3,850,000 (≈ USD 236) per person. Padar is optional for anyone who prefers to stay aboard.

Observed first: a 31 m phinisi, seven cabins, sixteen places

Soe Besar Vanrei is a traditional ironwood phinisi, about 31 m long and 5.76 m across the beam, built on three decks. She has seven cabins, each with its own bathroom and air conditioning.

16 guests sleep aboard, and the extra bed in the Master Suite makes a seventeenth place. Only one cabin, the Master Ocean, is on the main deck, which means the fewest stairs for a grandparent. Cruising speed is 7 to 9 knots. She carries radar, a compass and AIS.

Three generations, one boat: the parties it suits

This boat was written up first for a family of three generations: grandparents, their grown children and the grandchildren. What they want is one boat, one set of meals and one anchorage, with nobody left on shore. Sole use of the hull gives them that, and the family page works through the sums.

Next comes a group of 8 to 16, two or three households sharing the hull. Then there is the couple marking an anniversary, who take either a cabin on the open trip or the whole boat.

Three questions come up early, so the answers sit here. Children aged 0 to 2 travel free; the full fare starts at age 3. Life jackets are on board, and child sizes are confirmed in writing at booking from each child's age and weight. Non-spicy food for children and older guests is available on request and goes on the pre-departure form.

Padar is optional. Whoever stays aboard keeps the boat, the shade and the breakfast table.

Who sleeps where across five types of cabin

Five types of cabin, spread over three decks. On the upper deck is the Master Suite Ocean: one double bed, a pull-out extra bed for a third guest, a freestanding bathtub and a private terrace facing the sea. The two Deluxe Ocean cabins share that deck, each with a double bed and sea-view windows but no balcony.

The Master Ocean has the main deck to itself. Down on the lower deck are two Superior cabins and the Sharing Cabin. Each Superior has a double bed and portholes, while the Sharing Cabin has two bunk beds, four single berths in all.

For three generations, the split almost makes itself. Grandparents take the Master Ocean, parents go to the upper deck, and children fill the bunks or share a parent's cabin. Only the Master Suite takes a third guest.

Seven cabins, seven bathrooms, air conditioning in each. Cabin sizes are not published.

Sole use of the hull: three prices for three stays

Sole use of the hull means the decks, the cabins and the boat's crew are there for your party alone. You pay per boat, for 1 to 16 guests, so the price stays put when fewer relatives come. 2D1N costs IDR 81,000,000 (≈ USD 4,969), 3D2N IDR 162,000,000 (≈ USD 9,939) and 4D3N IDR 243,000,000 (≈ USD 14,908).

Split between sixteen relatives on the three-day stay, that is IDR 10,120,000 (≈ USD 621) each. With eight aboard, it comes to IDR 20,250,000 (≈ USD 1,242) each.

Billed beside the price: the national park package, quoted per trip type; drinks beyond the free-flow water, tea and coffee; tips; and the fee of whichever payment channel you pick. A private charter does not include a guide or photo and video documentation; both are quoted separately on request. Every line is on the charter page.

A single cabin on a weekly sailing

The open trip is a 3D2N that leaves on Fridays and Mondays, running Friday to Sunday or Monday to Wednesday. The next sailing in the boat's calendar is Friday, 4 December 2026. Seats start at IDR 3,850,000 (≈ USD 236) per person, which buys a bunk in the Sharing Cabin; the other cabins are priced per person, two sharing.

Those dates were read on 8 November 2026. Every seat is confirmed live on WhatsApp before you pay, and November 2026 is a docking month with no sailings. A seat needs other guests to sail with. For a family, a private cabin beats the Sharing Cabin, because other guests can be placed in its spare bunks.

The exact return time is confirmed in writing at booking; book the flight home for the late afternoon or the next day.

Open trip 3D2N, every Friday (Fri to Sun) and Monday (Mon to Wed) on the boat's calendar. November 2026 is docking. We confirm your cabin on WhatsApp before you pay.

Departure calendar

The transect: islands graded by walking effort

Here is the 3D2N route as a transect, with each stop graded by effort. The captain and the weather set the sequence; the grades stay the same.

  • Kelor: short. A hill walk on the first afternoon.
  • Manjarite: snorkel from the boat. Easy, or stay aboard.
  • Kalong: stay aboard. Flying foxes leave the roost after sunset.
  • Padar: optional. The one real climb of the route; skipping it costs nothing.
  • Pink Beach: short. A beach landing and a snorkel.
  • Komodo: short. A ranger-led walk, which anyone who prefers the deck can skip.
  • Manta Point and Taka Makassar: stay aboard or snorkel. Mantas are never promised.
  • Sebayur or Kanawa: snorkel on the last morning.

Caveat: tide and swell can move a snorkel stop to another island, and the captain makes that call on the day.

Unrecorded so far, and the guests we would redirect

Hot water in the cabins and wheelchair access are confirmed in writing before payment, so a guest who needs either should ask us first. The build year, engines, crew size and life-jacket counts are not published.

We would point three kinds of guest elsewhere. Divers: the boat has snorkel gear, kayaks and paddle boards and no dive equipment. Guests who need step-free access: the main-deck cabin cuts down the stairs but does not remove them. Parties after a day trip: there is none on this site, and every stay includes a night aboard.

Who this boat suits

  • Three generations on one boat, with the Master Ocean on the main deck for the guest who wants the fewest stairs
  • An extended family or friends of 8 to 16, each couple in a double cabin and four in the bunk cabin
  • A family that wants the whole boat on a private charter, or a single cabin on the 3D2N open trip

Who it does not suit

  • A trip built around scuba: the operator lists snorkelling gear only
  • A guest who needs a wheelchair-accessible boat: we do not claim wheelchair access, so ask us first

When this is the wrong boat

  • You want to choose the sailing date of a shared cabin: those cabins sail on Fridays and Mondays, confirmed on WhatsApp
  • You plan seventeen sleeping guests and expect a seventeenth bed: the seventeenth guest uses the extra bed in the Master Suite Ocean

Notes from Komodo Explorer guests

“Loved the experience — the team and crew are the best.”

“We watched the most gorgeous sunset while thousands of flying foxes (kalong) started flying above us against the orange sky. The crew knew exactly where to position the boat for the best view.”

“Pink Beach was our favourite spot — the pink sand against that crazy blue water. On the anjungan (front deck) we got gorgeous photos with the sail and open sea behind us.”

FAQ

Whole boat or a few cabins on the open trip: which suits our family better?

Charter the whole boat if your party wants its own pace and no strangers on the stairs: IDR 162,000,000 (≈ USD 9,939) for 3D2N, for 1 to 16 guests. Book cabins if two generations are enough and a Friday or Monday sailing suits you. Seats start at IDR 3,850,000 (≈ USD 236) per person, and a guide and documentation come inside the seat.

Can our family have the whole boat to ourselves?

Yes, at the boat price. Only the boat's crew and our reservation staff are involved, and nobody else is placed aboard. A cabin on the open trip works differently: other guests sail on the same dates, and any spare bunks in the Sharing Cabin can go to them.

Is there a cheaper way in than chartering the boat?

A cabin on the Friday or Monday open trip is the lower entry. The Sharing Cabin bunk is IDR 3,850,000 (≈ USD 236) per person, and the Superior is IDR 5,500,000 (≈ USD 337) per person, two sharing. Each seat needs other guests to sail with, and the date is confirmed on WhatsApp before you pay.

Do all three generations fit on a boat of seven cabins?

Yes. 16 guests sleep aboard, with a seventeenth on the Master Suite extra bed. Grandparents take the Master Ocean on the main deck, parents take the upper-deck cabins, and children share a parent's cabin or use the four bunk berths of the Sharing Cabin.
