Soe Besar Vanrei Phinisi

A route for grandparents that asks for almost no walking

Updated 8 November 2026

A Komodo route with grandparents and no trek works on Soe Besar Vanrei: of the nine stops on the 3D2N, only Kelor, Padar and the Komodo ranger walk ask for steps, and each can be skipped from the deck. The beaches, Manta Point, Kalong and the snorkel stops need no climbing.

Plan the route with us

Transect of the route with effort per stop

Below is the 3D2N, with an effort grade on every stop: skip, stay aboard, short or optional. Tide and weather can change the order, and the captain makes that call.

  • 1. Kelor, day 1: short, a hill walk that can be skipped from the deck.
  • 2. Manjarite, day 1: optional, a snorkel from the boat.
  • 3. Kalong at dusk, day 1: stay aboard and watch the flying foxes from the deck.
  • 4. Padar, day 2 morning: skip for anyone who dislikes steps, since the climb is hundreds of steps on loose ground.
  • 5. Pink Beach, day 2: short, a landing on sand, snorkel optional.
  • 6. Komodo Island, day 2: optional, a ranger-led walk; the short route is the easy one.
  • 7. Manta Point, day 2: stay aboard or snorkel, with strong current.
  • 8. Taka Makassar, day 2: short, a sandbar with little shade.
  • 9. Sebayur or Kanawa, day 3: optional, a snorkel or a beach, then the return to Labuan Bajo.

A measured path length or step count is not published for any stop.

Skip, stay aboard or go ashore on day two

Day 2, afternoon, Taka Makassar: two of the party swim, one reads on the sandbar, and the one who stayed on deck at Padar this morning is asleep on a lounger. Nobody has missed a stop that mattered to them.

Day 2 is the walking day, and the only one that needs a decision. Padar comes first and costs the most. Operators report 30 to 45 minutes up for a fit adult and 20 to 30 minutes down, longer at a slow pace; poles and breaks help, and knees complain on the descent. Whoever stays aboard keeps the boat, the breakfast and a view of the others climbing.

Komodo Island is another kind of walk. A ranger is compulsory, walking alone is prohibited, and the short route is the easy one. A grandparent can take the short route and leave the long one; on the day, the ranger sets pace and distance. Pink Beach, Manta Point, Taka Makassar and the snorkel stops stay open to everyone, whatever happened at Padar.

Where the boat is the easiest place to be

This boat is built for sitting. Cushioned loungers line the sun deck, the foredeck has a canopy over bean-bag cushions, and the indoor saloon has a long table, bench seating and a wall-mounted TV. The barbecue grill is on the covered dining deck. Every cabin is air-conditioned and has its own bathroom.

For a grandparent, the cabin to pick is the Master Ocean, alone on the main deck, with one double bed, wide windows and a shower. Every other cabin involves stairs. The bow jacuzzi is on board, but its depth is not published, so we ask a grandparent to decide with a doctor in mind. Wi-Fi is on board, but speed is not guaranteed, so we cannot promise a call home.

At night the boat stays at anchor. The captain chooses the anchorage by the weather, and a grandparent sleeps where the family sleeps. Caveat: access without steps is not claimed anywhere on board.

The same route as a three-day plan

Three days is the standard length, and for grandparents it is the right one. Day 1 is light: boarding, a short hill walk, a snorkel and a dusk stop. Day 2 is the heaviest, with one optional climb and one ranger walk. Day 3 is the lightest of all, a snorkel and the return to Labuan Bajo after lunch.

A 2D1N is a sample route that squeezes the day-2 stops into one long day, with one spare hour and no slack. A 4D3N is a sample route with slower days at Kanawa, Gili Lawa, Sebayur and Bidadari, and Gili Lawa has a walk that can be skipped too. On either, the final order is agreed with the captain.

Day by day, the block shows the 3D2N. Set it beside the grades above. Wherever a stop is graded skip or optional, a grandparent decides on the day, and choosing the deck carries no penalty.

Times here are patterns, not a timetable. Pickup and return times are confirmed when you book, so choose a late-afternoon flight home.

Wheelchairs and walkers: what we cannot yet say

Access for a wheelchair is not claimed for Soe Besar Vanrei. A ramp, a step-free path and door widths are not published, and we do not guess. A walker or a stick is another question: the beaches are soft sand, the trails are uneven, and boarding includes a transfer between boat and shore.

Everything we can describe is written above: the main-deck cabin, the stairs to the other decks and the grade of each stop. If you need more than that, write to us before you pay. We reply in writing, and if this boat does not suit you, we say so.

One cabin is on the main deck, there are three decks, and stairs join them. A ramp, a lift, door widths and rail heights are not published.

FAQ

Will you confirm access for a wheelchair or a walker before we pay?

Access for a wheelchair is not claimed for this boat. The Master Ocean is the only cabin on the main deck, the other decks involve stairs, and boarding includes a transfer between boat and shore. Write to us before booking with what you need, and we answer in writing, including a no if that is the honest answer.

If a grandparent skips the Padar climb, what else stays open?

Everything else. Pink Beach, the Komodo ranger walk, Manta Point, Taka Makassar, Kalong and the snorkel stops all stay open, and whoever skips Padar keeps the boat. On Komodo the short route is the easy one. Wildlife and calm water are never guaranteed.

Does the route visit Komodo Island, Padar, Pink Beach and Manta Point, or only Rinca?

The 3D2N names Komodo Island itself, not Rinca. Day 2 takes in Padar, Pink Beach, the ranger walk on Komodo, Manta Point and Taka Makassar. The tide and the captain's call can change the order, and mantas are never promised.

Are three days enough if two guests walk slowly?

Three days suit slow walkers well. Day 1 is light, day 2 carries the only climb and the ranger walk, and day 3 is a snorkel and the return. A 2D1N crams day 2 into a hurry, while a 4D3N adds slower days, with the final order agreed with the captain.

Can grandparents manage boarding and the cabin stairs?

Grandparents do travel on phinisi, and the Master Ocean on the main deck keeps stairs to a minimum. Boarding includes a transfer between boat and shore, and step-free access is not claimed. Tell us about mobility, heart conditions and medication, and we answer in writing before you pay.
