How a day runs when three generations share one deck

Updated 8 November 2026

A day on a phinisi for three generations on Soe Besar Vanrei runs in blocks: a morning landing, a long lunch aboard, a slack afternoon and one short stop before dusk. The 3D2N starts and ends in Labuan Bajo, and the boat stays at anchor each night.

A day aboard, from the first coffee to the last light

Day 2, morning, Padar: the climb is optional, and whoever stays aboard keeps the boat. Sunrise there is at 05:31 in November and 06:18 in July, so the earliest landing of the trip comes before breakfast.

Each day of the 3D2N has the same shape. There is a landing or a snorkel stop in the morning, a long meal at midday, a second stop in the afternoon and a quiet evening at anchor. Day 1 goes from the harbour to Kelor, a short hill walk, then Manjarite for the first snorkel and Kalong at dusk. Day 2 is the long one: Padar, breakfast aboard, Pink Beach, the ranger walk on Komodo, then Manta Point and Taka Makassar. Day 3 finishes with a snorkel at Sebayur or Kanawa, lunch, and the return to Labuan Bajo.

Nobody prints clock times for the stops. Tide, current and the captain set the order, and a guest who sits a stop out loses nothing but the walk.

Meals at the long table

Meals are served in two places. One is the indoor saloon, with a long dining table and bench seating; the other is the covered open-air dining deck, which has a barbecue grill. For the 3D2N open trip, the seat includes 7 meals, a welcome drink, afternoon snacks, tropical drinks, fruit, fresh coconut, and free-flow mineral water, tea and coffee.

The meal count for a private charter is confirmed in writing with the quote. Children eat what the adults eat unless you tell us otherwise. Non-spicy dishes for children and older guests are no problem: note it on the pre-departure form, and the menus are confirmed closer to the travel date.

Long tables, a barbecue, fruit and coconut are on board. The daily menu is confirmed closer to the date.

Shade, sleep and the slack afternoon

After lunch the boat moves on, and the day goes slack on purpose. Cushioned loungers line the sun deck, and the foredeck has a canopy over bean-bag cushions. Up there a grandparent sleeps through the transit and a toddler is allowed to be bored. Every cabin is air-conditioned, so a nap below works for any age.

Ashore, shade is scarce. Padar, Taka Makassar and the trails offer little cover, and hats, water and closed shoes with grip count for more than any plan. Snorkel gear, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and life jackets are on board. The children burn off their energy swimming, and the adults take turns watching them.

Caveat: which stop lands in the morning and which in the afternoon follows the tide and the captain's call, not our timetable.

Getting to the harbour in time

Komodo Airport (LBJ) is the only airport, about 2 km from town, a drive of about 10 minutes. Our recommendation is to land the day before you sail. Boarding happens in the morning, too early to trust a same-day flight, and a late plane costs you the first stop.

The pickup from your hotel or the airport to the harbour is part of the trip. Its time is confirmed in writing when you book, and on a private charter it can be set around your flights. Before sailing, the driver's contact reaches you on WhatsApp, so nobody stands at a curb guessing.

Send everyone's full name exactly as it appears in the passport. The harbour's e-boarding pass uses those names, and a mismatch is a delay nobody needs. Children need a name on the manifest too.

Inbound flight, outbound flight

Most families connect through Bali, about 1 h 10 to 1 h 20 in the air, or Jakarta, about 2 h 30 to 3 h. Surabaya and Lombok are smaller feeders. The table above lists the airports and airlines seen serving Komodo Airport, checked on 3 November 2026. Schedules and fares change, so confirm with the airline before you buy; we quote no flight numbers.

Getting out matters as much as getting in. On the last day the boat reaches Labuan Bajo after the morning snorkel and lunch, and from there you go to the hotel or the airport. We confirm the exact return time in writing before you book a flight home. Book an afternoon or evening departure, and ask us first.

Caveat: a delayed flight on arrival day is the one risk no timetable removes, and that is why the day before is our default.

FAQ

How does a day run when a toddler and a grandparent share one boat?

In blocks. Mornings hold a landing or a snorkel, then comes a long lunch at the table, a slack afternoon on the loungers or in an air-conditioned cabin, and one short stop before dusk. Anyone who wants to skip a stop stays aboard. Order and timing follow the tide and the captain, so think of the plan as a rhythm rather than a timetable.

Who meets us in Labuan Bajo, and when does the driver's number arrive?

A driver picks you up at your hotel or Komodo Airport and takes you to the harbour; the transfer is part of the trip. The pickup time is confirmed in writing when you book, and the driver's contact reaches you on WhatsApp before sailing. On a private charter, the pickup can be set around your flights.

Which cities feed Labuan Bajo, and how early should we land?

Bali is the short hop, about 1 h 10 to 1 h 20, while Jakarta takes about 2 h 30 to 3 h. Surabaya and Lombok are smaller feeders. Land the day before you sail, so that a late flight costs you an evening and not the first stop. Check current days with the airline; we give no fares or flight numbers.

What time does the trip finish, and when can we book the flight home?

On the last day the boat returns to Labuan Bajo after the morning snorkel and lunch, and you head to your hotel or the airport. We confirm the return time in writing before you book a flight home. Pick an afternoon or evening departure, and ask us before you pay for any ticket.

Will the kitchen cook mild food for the children and the oldest guest?

Yes. Non-spicy dishes for children and older guests are no problem. Note it on the pre-departure form and we pass it to the kitchen; menus are confirmed closer to the travel date. For any other dietary need, tell us at booking and we answer in writing.
