When to book a family charter in Komodo: school holidays, calm months and lead time

Updated 8 November 2026

For a three-generation party the calmest window is April to June and October to November. July to September is dry but windy, crowded and booked 4 to 6 months ahead. Soe Besar Vanrei is in dock through November 2026; its open trips resume on Friday 4 December, and private dates are agreed against the boat's calendar.

What the calendar shows on 8 November 2026

From the boat's own calendar, read today: the open trip is a 3D2N that leaves every Friday and every Monday. The calendar marks the whole of November 2026 as maintenance and docking, so no departure exists that month. The next ones are Friday 4, 11, 18 and 25 December and Monday 28 December, and on the day we read it every cabin on those dates was open.

The 2027 tab repeats the Friday and Monday pattern through the year, and most of it is open. A few dates already carry a booking or a hold, among them 8 and 15 January and 23 July. A handful of other cells, such as 1 May, 1 June and 12 August 2027, break the pattern, and we print none of them until the operator confirms in writing.

The day docking ends, school calendars and private bookings the boat may already hold are not in the calendar. Read this paragraph as a snapshot, not a promise, and ask us for the live status on WhatsApp.

Open-trip days or your own dates

An open trip sells cabins to separate parties on fixed Fridays and Mondays. A private charter sells the whole boat to one party. For a family of 12 to 16 the second is the real product, because a boat with even one cabin sold to strangers is no longer a whole boat.

Private dates are agreed against the boat's calendar, so a Wednesday start is something to ask us about, not something the rules forbid. The boat's calendar allows an open-trip date with no cabin booked to be switched to private use. In practice the quickest private date is often a Friday or Monday that nobody has taken yet.

You also choose the length. The charter is sold as 2D1N, 3D2N or 4D3N. The longer plan gives the captain more room to move a stop when the sea says so, and for a party with grandparents that slack is worth having. Nights are spent at anchor, in a spot the captain picks once he has read the forecast.

Sea and weather, month by month

The dry season runs from April to November and the wet season from December to March. Within that, what a family needs to know is short.

  • April to June, October to November: calm water, good visibility, moderate crowds. This is the window we would choose for three generations.
  • July to August: dry but windy. South-east winds build from June and peak now, so crossings can be choppy, and the crowds are at their highest.
  • December to March: rain, the roughest seas of the year and frequent closures. February is the heaviest month.

Closures are not limited to the wet season. The harbour authority closed routes in stages from 29 December 2025 to 4 February 2026, and all tourist vessels were stopped from 14 to 20 January 2026 (CNN Indonesia, 3 February 2026). On 6 to 8 August 2026, mid dry season, Komodo and Padar were closed again for waves of up to 2.4 m and south-east wind of up to 24 knots (detikBali, 6 August 2026). BMKG gave a typical 0.5 to 1.5 m for the southern Sape Strait in October 2024.

Caveat: no month guarantees the sea, a manta or a dragon.

School holidays and the quota

School holidays pull demand toward July, August and September, which are also the months the wind is strongest. One Labuan Bajo agency advises booking high season 4 to 6 months ahead. For a July sailing, that means writing to us in February or March.

The park adds a second limit. A cap of 1,000 visitors a day has applied since 1 April 2026 to Padar, Rinca, Komodo and 23 dive sites (Antara, 15 April 2026), and liveaboard guests count. Dates in July to September fill first. Every day your boat spends in the park needs a place under the cap, which is one more reason a three-generation party should not leave the date to the last month.

We have no school calendars in our files. They differ by country and by year, and quoting a range here would be guessing. Look at the calendars of every branch of the family, find the two weeks that overlap, and send us three alternative windows. That lets us check each against the boat, the sea and the quota in one pass.

How far ahead, and what moving a date costs

Outside July to September we give no fixed lead time. What we can say is that December 2026 and nearly all of 2027 are open on the calendar today, and that a settled date lets you buy flights with confidence.

The terms are plain. A deposit of 50 percent confirms the dates, and the balance falls due 30 days before departure. A cancellation 60 days or more ahead returns 50 percent of the payment, one 30 to 59 days ahead returns 25 percent, and a later one returns nothing. Changing the date is free at least 30 days before departure, subject to availability, and costs IDR 500,000 between 14 and 29 days before.

Rates for 2027 are on request, with 2026 as the reference. If a 2027 rate differs from it, we tell you before final payment, and you can cancel without a fee. Buy flights after the dates are confirmed in writing.

An order of work that suits a big family

Families of 12 to 16 lose weeks when ten people answer one question one after another. Working in a fixed order keeps it short.

  • Week 1: one person collects head count, ages and the school windows, and sends them with the WhatsApp message prefilled on this site.
  • Week 2: we reply with the live status of each window, the cabin split and a written quote.
  • Week 3: the family agrees the date and pays the deposit.
  • After that: flights, then passport details seven days before sailing.

This order has one decision per week. No date is held while you decide: until the deposit is paid, the calendar belongs to whoever pays first.

FAQ

What is the calmest time for a family charter in Komodo?

April to June and October to November: calm water, clear visibility and moderate crowds. July and August are dry but windy and the busiest. December to March brings rain, rough seas and closures. No month guarantees conditions, so pick a date with some slack and consider the 4D3N plan.

Can we sail in November 2026?

Not on Soe Besar Vanrei. The boat's calendar marks all of November 2026 as maintenance and docking, as read on 8 November 2026. The next open-trip departures are Friday 4, 11, 18 and 25 December and Monday 28 December. Ask us about private dates in December.

Can a private charter use a Friday or Monday open-trip date?

Often, yes. The boat's calendar lets an open-trip date with no cabin booked be switched to private use. If even one cabin is sold on that date, the boat is no longer free as a whole. We confirm the status with the operator and tell you in writing.

How far ahead should we book for July to September?

One Labuan Bajo agency advises 4 to 6 months ahead for high season, and the park has capped visitors at 1,000 a day since 1 April 2026. For a July sailing, write to us by February or March, with three alternative windows if your school calendars allow.
